About the Residency

The UW Medicine orthopedic residency is a 12-month full-time post-graduate training program for a licensed therapist that wants to specialize in orthopedics. We have two tracks, an advanced clinical track and a teaching track. Both tracts have three primary areas of focus:

  • Advanced clinical practice: the resident will practice on average 36 hours a week at IRG Physical and Hand Therapy Ballard or at MTI (Magnolia or Bellevue).  Here the residents will have the opportunity to advance their clinical reasoning and practice and be mentored by highly skilled clinicians in all areas of orthopedic practice.  Also, the resident will receive additional didactic training both through the University and external courses being offered through the Ola Grimsby Institute and Evidence in Motion.
  • Physical Therapist as Educator
    • Teaching Tract: The resident will receive training in evidence-based teaching methods and will have the chance to apply these skills in two entry-level DPT orthopedic classes. Additionally, they will serve as a clinical instructor for a student pair and engage in community education initiatives.
    • Clinical Tract:The resident will receive training in evidence-based teaching methods and will have the chance to apply these skills in developing educational resources for the orthopedic tract, tutor entry level DPT students and serve as a clinical instructor for a student pair during their integrated clinical education.
  • Leadership and advocacy: The resident will have education on leadership styles and skills and the different components of advocacy.  The resident will have an opportunity to participate in a quality improvement activity and advocate for both the profession and their patients while in the program.

The resident is in a salaried position at the University of Washington and includes medical and dental benefits, sick leave, two weeks of vacation, and state-observed holidays and retirement. Tuition is $5200 for the year.  This covers the external courses that the resident is required to attend the and all administrative costs while in the program (ABPTRFE Program Financial Fact Sheet)
